Chess Rules

AIHEC Chess Competition Rules:

  • There will be placement awards for the top three (3) individuals.

  • All six rounds are Game in fifteen (15) Minutes with a ten (10) second add-on or delay.

  • Each TCU team can only have 4 players.

Chess Guidelines

AIHEC Chess Competition Guidelines & Procedures:

  • The Chess coordinator is chosen by the host committee. The Chess coordinator will reserve an appropriately sized location. The coordinator can reserve a classroom-sized room.

  • The Chess coordinator will provide periodic updates to the host committee concerning registration numbers and the cost of the Chess supplies and timer technology.

  • The Chess coordinator may use the proven rules from above and make minor adjustments as the need arises to adapt to the specific host location, participant-entry size, budget limitations, etc.

  • It is highly recommended that the coordinator uses a “knockout” style with single elimination format for this competition and tailor it to the number of registered players. The coordinator will do everything possible to avoid pairings of players from the same college in the first round to make sure each registered player gets to play at least one game.

  • The Chess coordinator needs to recruit two (2) to three (3) people (faculty, staff, or students) to assist with onsite scheduling, monitoring, and registration.

  • The suggested Checklist of Materials to bring to the conference includes a master spreadsheet of the registered students, eight (8) chess boards, eight (8) sets of chess pieces, and eight (8) chess clocks.

  • Have a firm registration deadline. At least seven (7) days before the start of the conference is recommended.

  • Enter registered students into a master spreadsheet by college to ease the checking in process at the conference.

  • The coordinator should arrive at the conference at least one (1) day prior to the competition to set up the room reserved for the Chess competition with at least eight (8) tables for chess boards and two (2) chairs for each table.

  • The coordinator may also be a monitor (referee) for the competition. Should a dispute arise, the coordinator reserves the right to confer with experienced players, administrators, or elders as needed to make the best decision possible in the spirit of competition.

  • Once the conference begins, the students are responsible for their own scheduling of other conference competitions.

  • The Chess coordinator is responsible for reporting the winning players to the awards’ banquet coordinator.

  • The competition can run two days, depending on the number of registered players and teams.
